Self-tape auditions are here to stay, whether we like it or not. They have become the standard practice in the entertainment industry. Many casting directors and producers expect actors to be proficient in creating high-quality self-tapes.

SELF-TAPE AUDITIONS GUIDELINES

Analyze the Scene:
Carefully read the audition scene to understand the character, context, and follow any specific CD instructions provided.

Be memorized:
Be as off book as possible. If a casting director watches you struggling with your lines in a self-tape, they'll wonder why you didn't just re-tape it. Rehearse multiple times, be familiar with the character's emotions and motivations to feel confident in your delivery. If you do not have enough time to memorize tape the sides out of frame so you can refer to them if necessary.

Find a Reader:
Collaborate with like-minded artists and help each other out.If nobody is available. Find a reader instantly (for free or hire) on the WeAudition platform.Utilize WeAudition’s taping feature and export files to quickly submit them or use the reader and set up your own camera to film your scene.

Direct your Reader:
Wether your reader is in the room or remote (via a computer or cell phone video or audio) place your reader next to the camera, about one step away from it. Set up your remote reader on your device at eye level for filming.

Set Up Your Space:
Choose a quiet and well-lit space for recording. Ensure that your background is neutral and free from distractions or use a backdrop stand with a grey or black background.

Camera Setup:
Set up your camera on a stable tripod.
If using a smartphone, use a Gimbal stabilizer phone video light kit. Make sure it's positioned horizontally for a widescreen format and on do not disturb mode. Otherwise, calls may interrupt your audition.

Frame Your Shot:
Frame the shot from the chest up, ensuring your face is well-lit and clearly visible. Follow any specific framing guidelines provided in the audition instructions.

Audio Quality:
Use an external microphone to improve audio quality. For example a Lavalier Lapel Mic or a wireless one for the iphone. Ensure there is minimal background noise, and your voice is clear.

Lighting:
Utilize natural light if possible. Position yourself facing a window to achieve even and flattering lighting. If filming indoors, consider using a lighting kit,  soft box lights , a softbox latern or ring lights. And an LED Video light Kit, or smaller ring light with stand and phone holder, when you travel.

Wardrobe:
Dress appropriately for the character and scene. Avoid busy patterns or overly bright colors that may distract from your performance.

Recording:
Record multiple takes to capture different nuances in your performance. Be mindful of the audition time limit and follow any specific instructions for slate (introduction).

Editing (if necessary):
Use video editing software to trim and cut your self-tape if needed. However, keep it minimal to maintain the authenticity of your performance.

Send a downloadable file
Most agents/casting directors/producers will request a link to a downloadable file. You'll need to compress your file down to a reasonable size (under 100 mb, 25 mb is best, all depending on the length of the audition) Use Codec: H264, deinterlaced with a scale of 768x876 bei 4:3 / 1024x876 bei 16:9 and convert it to an .mp4 format. You can convert your files with Mpeg Streamclip (Download it for free at http://www.squared5.com)  , use WeTransfer that  converts your file into a link for free, or use imovie if you are an apple / iPhone user.

Slate:
Include a slate at the end of your audition. State your name, height, and agency (if applicable) as per industry standards.

Review and Retake:
Review your self-tape before submitting. If necessary, retake and make improvements. Ensure that you are satisfied with the final submission.

Uploading:
Follow the submission instructions provided by the casting director. Pay attention to file format, naming conventions, and any other specific requirements.

Submit Promptly:
Submit before the deadline and follow any additional instructions for submitting your self-tape. Every office is different, but some view self-tapes as they arrive and may give you redirects.
